The Citizen Kane of Videogames, Part Uno

Haven't we heard this phrase before? There's always so much debate over which videogame is the proverbial Citizen Kane of the industry, as in which videogame can be recognized by the most people as being "the best." for those who are not film buffs, the movie Citizen Kane is widely regarded by professional movie critics as the best film ever made, and as such you can't really BE a professional film snob-- I mean critic, without agreeing to this one unwritten rule amongst the Oscar-loving film community.

There have been quite a few videogames that, whether coined "the Citizen Kane of gaming" or not, HAVE been praised as being one of the best, if not the best, ever made. Some of the more popular choices for this controversial category have been Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros. 3, and ABC News even did a piece in collaboration with Michael Thomsen from IGN giving a detailed analysis claiming Metroid Prime to be the Citizen Kane of videogames, directly comparing their themes and stories.

Consider this video by Anthony Burch to be in line with my feelings about not only Metroid Prime, but ANY game being called "The Citizen Kane of videogames."

PC Gamer Doesn't Like Forced Baptism in Bioshock Infinite, Asks Valve For Refund on Steam

There are a few obvious aspects to this story (as pointed out in the comments section of that article) that we can talk about, but those discussions have been pretty well-tread and feel slightly redundant to talk about right now. Anyways, that stuff isn't what I want to point out. The point I want to emphasize is the polite and cool-headed way that he wrote to Valve. I frankly don't give a crap what this guy thinks of the game, or if he's offended enough to ask for a refund, that's his decision. I can't possibly fathom how someone can be so offended that they refuse to even finish the game, but again, it's his free time and money, he can do whatever the hell he wants.  However, it's just nice to see someone express this in calm and rational manner.

Gamers can insult this guy all they want, but his behavior and methods for expressing his discomfort and dislike towards a part of the game is a refreshing change of pace from the usual idiotic behavior that permeates the online gaming community.

When this guy has a problem with an aspect of a game, he coherently asserts in an email to Valve why he should get a refund, and then moves on with life. He doesn't spend his time trolling message boards and comment sections every day raging about what he hates about the game. He doesn't whip other gamers into a frenzy to pursue an unbelievably misguided excuse for an activist crusade He doesn't spew hate-filled garbage or hostile insults or even death threats to the developers or threaten to bring frivolous legal action against them or the publisher.

When many others within the online gaming community have a problem with a certain aspect of a game, well...

Syko Shadow's 2009 Gaming Shout-Outs

In preparation for the end of 2010, I will be re-posting/re-writinging a blog exactly one year old from GameTrailers.com. It is my version of a gaming award show, except for a couple of things:

1) I give just as much recognition to the runners-up as the winner of each category
2) I don't whore out to mainstream crap
3) I'm not Spike TV

So without further ado, let's go back in time and remember the best (and a few of the worst) games of last year, 2009!

Spike VGA's 2010 - My Votes

Written by Syko Shadow

Well, it's that time of year again, to have Spike TV embarass the entire gaming industry by trying to pull off some dipshit award show that focuses more on celebrity cameos than honest recognition of the greatest accomplishments of developers and publishers this year. The only reason anyone watches this award show is the ocassional debut of a new game, or premiere of a new trailer or some shit. We just put up with the awful award nominations and the Jersey Shore cast until the next game trailer.

But what the hell, let's humor Spike TV for now and pretend the VGA's are anything other than a completely goddamn stupid gaming minstrel show. I'm going to look through their award nominees and judge which ones I would vote for if it made any difference.
